Cautious. Not necessarily optimistic.

Apparently, BP has stopped the leak. Well the leak on the valve that is… recent reports have indicated that a “seep” has been located on the ocean floor near the well. The seep could mean one of two things: we have a environmental disaster on our hands that would be near impossible to contain or control, or the seep is a natural occurrence that is little cause for alarm.

The ocean floor seep was suspected when pressure on the valve cap was lower than expected, raising concern there was a leak somewhere else in the well bore; if this the case, the valve cap will have to be reopened to prevent complete environmental annihilation and will create a situation extremely difficult to fix. And underground leak could let oil and gas escape uncontrolled through the bedrock and mud under the ocean’s surface.

The most concerning of all, for me, is that BP has an interest in keeping the valve cap closed until the relief well is completed.  If the valves are reopened, 100% of the oil will be captured by ships on the surface, allowing the oil flow to be measured, a number on which government fines will be based. But if BP keeps the valves shut, the fine will have to be based on previous estimates which were most likely lower than the real number. I’d bet the farm that BP is willing to take that little risk.

I’m wearing flowers on my face! One of the items I picked up at the natural make up party was a blush by Zuii Certified Organic Flora Makeup. Zuii Organics are made in Australia. Through my ecojunkie research I happened upon a great organization based in the US called Women’s Voices for the Earth. I have had a couple of conversations with Cassidy Randall, the Program and Outreach Coordinator for WVE. Last week, Cassidy asked me to be one of the first “Actionistas” for WVE. I sent out the following email as my first “Actionista Action!”

Hi all

An organization I’m involved with called Women’s Voices for the Earth (WVE) just put out a new report on fragrance chemicals in household cleaners linked to respiratory disorders, hormone disruption, reduced fertility and birth defects-and these chemicals are showing up in blood, breast milk, and even in newborns! The worst part is that cleaning product companies don’t have to tell us what’s in their products; they are legally allowed to keep these ingredients a secret from us! But WVE and I are working to change this.

If you are willing, please click on the link below to take a quick minute to send cleaning product manufacturers an email telling them to come clean on fragrance chemicals? Here’s the link:

Scroll to the bottom, fill in your info and click “Send Your Message”.

Thanks all!!

Heather

Speaking of baking. Most of my bakeware is also covered in a questionable non-stick coating. GreenPan doesn’t make bakeware (and I still am unsure of where to purchase it in Canada) but EarthChef DOES make eco-friendly non-stick bakeware as well as cookware.

Pies! Cakes! Cookies! Breads! Muffins! Toxin free!

The best part is, EarthChef is sold at the Bay, Zellers and Home Outfitters.

Pots and Pans.

Teflon. Nasty stuff. The chemical used to make non-stick pans is found in over 95% of our bloodstreams (and 100% of umbilical cords). PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) is extremely persistent, stick to our tissues indefinitely, and is considered toxic and carcinogenic to humans. Not only is it found in the non-stick coating in your frying pan, but also in industrial waste, stain resistant carpets, carpet cleaning liquids, house dust, microwave popcorn bags, water, food, and and other sources of PTFE.

As a part of my packing and “stuff reduction plan” I am getting rid of all my old Teflon cookware. I am on the hunt for a non stick eco friendly replacement that my new roommate and I can agree on!

Well. It’s Saturday again. Cleaning day. And it looks like my bathtub needs a scrub. I hate cleaning the bathtub. Up until taking on this ecochallenge I have always resorted to VIM cleaners. I can’t find any information on the ingredients in VIM, but my gut reaction is that they are probably not that great.

I finally found a cleanser that cleans as well as VIM but without all the harsh chemicals; Nature Clean Tub and Tile Cream Cleanser. The ingredients make me happy:

Ingredients: WATER, NEPHELINE SYENITE (A NATURAL MINERAL WITH NO CRYSTALLINE SILICA), SODIUM BICARBONATE (BAKING SODA), GLYCERINE (FROM VEGETABLES), BENTONITE (AMORPHOUS WITH NO CRYSTALLINE SILICA), FATTY POLYGLYCOSIDE (FROM CORN STARCH AND PALM KERNEL OIL), COCOBETAINE (FROM PLANT SOURCE), ETHYL ALCOHOL (FROM GRAIN), XANTHAN GUM AND POTASSIUM SORBATE (FOOD GRADE PRESERVATIVES).

And it’s available at retailers across Canada.

The other cheap and readily available option? You guessed it: vinegar. Try making a paste with baking soda and vinegar to scrub out that soap scum, it will require a little more elbow grease, but just think, you can skip the bicep curls at the gym tomorrow!!

*additional hint: spray your shower curtain and stall with a spritz of hydrogen peroxide cut with water to prevent mildew. (please don’t buy (into) that self cleaning shower spray idea.

Marie Veronique Organics.

Although I have (just, like yesterday) started making my own cosmetics, I am coveting Marie Veronique. Marie obviously has access to ingredients that I will never have access to…

A few pluses:

  • all of her ingredients are vegan except for four (honey being one of them).
  • most of her ingredients are organic and many are fair trade and local.
  • zero toxins, no petroleum based product and no nanoparticles.
  • and WOW… expensive. but, Marie does donate 10% of her profits to The Acumen Fund, “dedicated to creating better opportunities for women and children in Third World countries”. That is a really beautiful thing.
